The Womens Veterans Resource Fair will take place on Saturday, May 16th, 2015 from 9AM until 3PM at Summit County Veterans Service Commission and will seek to serve female veterans of any age from Summit, Portage, Stark, and Medina Counties. At the resource fair, each veteran will register upon entering to better update our data on the number and status of female veterans in our community. Any women who have ever served in the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, Coast Guard, Reserves, or National Guard are encouraged to attend this event. Community vendors offering legal support, therapy, housing and employment services will be in place. Manicures and hair styling will be available, as well as refreshments.
This event is being held in response to the lack of female veterans benefiting from the services regularly provided for male veterans. According to the VA’s website, less than half of the eligible female veterans had received VA health care in 2009. Women made up nearly 11% of veterans in 2009, and the percentage has gradually increased every year since the early nineties. Despite that rising number, there are seriously concerning gaps between the treatment of men and women in every aspect of veteran benefits including health care, job training, housing, employments, mental health services and more.
Volunteers, especially female and/or veteran volunteers, are needed for this event to help set up, serve food and drink, help with childcare and clean-up following the event.
